Hi all,

my configuration is already described here:
http://www.cubieforums.com/index.php?topic=2557.0
In short:
- HDD Addon
- SATA 3.5"
- Power supply 12V 6A
- Wheezy CT v1.9 (http://www.cubieforums.com/index.php?topic=1275.0)

I have connected to CT these 2 disks:
a) SATA disk 3.5". Mount options:
/dev/sda1 on /media/sata type ext4 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,data=ordered)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,size=1048576k)

b) USB disk 2.5". Mount options:
/dev/sdb1 on /media/usb type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other,blksize=4096)

I am running rsync to copy my files from usb disk to sata disk. My command:
rsync -rtvuW --delete /media/usb/myfiles /media/sata/mynewfiles/ --log-file=/opt/myrsync.log

When rsync copies about 10~14GB from usb to sata then CT is restarting!!!!!
I have run this command 4 times with the same result  :o
The same behaviour in CT when running simple cp command on the same directories.

The case is that most of times CT freeze and need a hardware restart.
After many times running the same rsync command I finally got this error in log files at /var/log/ :
Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address

Full error in kernel.log :

May 23 22:23:07 myct kernel: [ 2154.617062] note: rsync[2899] exited with preempt_count 1

As I got this error in logs only once, I am not 100% sure if the same error occurs in rest times that my CT freeze and no errors in log files at all.

Notes:
1) Temperature is about: Board: 53°C - Hard Drive: 37°C (using OS .bashrc script and hddtemp)
2) CPU load of rsync is about 50% (I see two rsync processes using top)

Any ideas how to overcome this problem?

From my side, I can overcome this problem by just make batch copies of 10GB, but then the bug will not be resolved. I prefer to help someone to fix this bug, just tell me how I can help you to debug this problem.
Just tell me, if you need output from hdparm or smartcl or any other tool.

Forum notes: I originally create this post in " Hardware -> Cubieboard v3 Hardware (Cubietruck) " instead of "Operating System -> Cubieboard v3 OS (Cubietruck) ". So, I copy it again here in OS subforum.

Thanks,
Adrianos.

No answers/questions yet :(

Current partition (only one exists) in SATA disk is ext4.
Partition table is created with GNU parted.

I am thinking to reformat this partition using a different filesystem.  What filesystem do you suggest for 3TB hard disk?

Do you believe that this might help or problem is not related to filesystem at all?

Thanks,
Adrianos.

Finally problem SOLVED!!!

After reformat partition and do many other things to find out what was causing the problem, finally a colleague advised me to try power CT with an additional power supply.

Old power installation:
=======================================
                                                             |-> CT
power 12V 6A <-> "CT HDD Addon"  <-|
                                                             |-> HD SATA 3.5"
=======================================

Working power installation:
=======================================
power 5V 3A   <-> CT
power 12V 6A <-> "CT HDD Addon"  <->  HD SATA 3.5"
=======================================

It looks like output USB power adapters of "CT HDD Addon" is a crap. It cannot provide Amperes required by CT, even if power supply supports much more Amperes than CT and Hard Disk needed.

My advice is to use 1 power adapter for CT and an additional power adapter for "CT HDD Addon" (only needed if you need Hard Disk SATA 3.5").

Adrianos Dadis.

Sorry that you had to find this solution all on your own, another sample of great support provided by cubitech!
On a side note, I have been using a 3.5 inch SSHD drive with cubieboard2 and have not yet seen this problem. I have seen the AXP chip is screwing up after a hard power shutdown in the middle of running though, with an older 3.3 kernel.
For 3TB you can use GPT with Ext4..

The truth is that I was in dead end, as I am not very familiar with hardware and power problems, but finally (after external help) I found the solution/workaround.
In order to help other users too, I will be glad if you quote this problem (as a warning) in a more global area (in HDD Addon specification) or make clear how many Amperes HDD Addon can provide in USB output or both of them.

My CT with ssd kept crashing with the 2 USB supllies connected. Once I switched to using my PSP 5v supply its been perfect

I guess USB supplier cannot provide enough Amperes for CT.
If I remember well, a USB can supply less than 1A.

But USB power supplies can deliver 2.1 A. This is outsideof the usb standard.
But you will need that for SSD or HDD !!!
