Title: IBOX - a Cubieboard A20 variant
Post by: castalla on April 25, 2014, 07:13:18 pm
ITEAD have just released a new mini-PC based on the Cubieboard A20 - https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ibox-mini-multi-function-single-board-computer/x/7069438#home

Could we start a new dedicated thread for this device?   Or, maybe just use this new topic as a starting point?

Interesting... the only thing is that I couldn't find any specific mention of Cubieboard... but totally looks like something you can build with a CB2...
Good to know, thx! ::)

My IBOX arrived today.

Here are my initial experiences:

1.  The original IBOX images seem to be unavailable, or the download fails before completion!

2.  I used the Wheezy server image at http://www.cubieforums.com/index.php?topic=1275.msg7719#msg7719

3.  There appear to be some install hiccups where the image doesn't automatically reboot.  I found I had to reboot the device to get a working ethernet link.

4.  I'm sure there are some tunings which could be made, but that's for later!

In order to completely download the OS images, I had to use a downloader tool Chrome extension: DownloadAll.

My iBox seems to have a problem with the Ethernet- it won't connect with DHCP or static IP.

Best.

I saw the same problem with ethernet.   I initially thought the ethernet socket was defective ...

After several attempts at booting the Debian server image, I finally switched the unit off and on again - ethernet came up and using WinSCP edited the interfaces file (maybe you can do this directly in Windows as the files are readable on the written card).

My settings are:

  # interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
#your static IP
address 192.168.1.56
#your gateway IP
gateway 192.168.1.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
#your network address "family"

broadcast 192.168.1.255

#auto eth0
#allow-hotplug eth0
#iface eth0 inet dhcp
#        hwaddress ether 00:01:43:a0:63:fb # if you want to set MAC manually
#        pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 3838 # setting MTU for DHCP, static just: mtu 3838
#auto wlan0
#allow-hotplug wlan0
#iface wlan0 inet dhcp
#    wpa-ssid SSID
#    wpa-psk xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
# to generate proper encrypted key: wpa_passphrase yourSSID yourpassword

Let's hope more IBOXERS post here so we can share tips!

Nope ... there's definitely a problem with the ethernet setup  My functioning setup fails after a hard reboot.

edit: seems to have settled down (added hotplug to interface file

Hi

I have the same problem with my ibox... I must power cycle 3-4 times before rj45 port green led turns on and links up.

I have regret not buying the cubieboard now :(

A workaround is to buy a cheap wifi dongle.

Have you contacted ITEAD about ths?

Well, I really need a working ethernet... sadly it seems a common  hardware issue and not related to OS or kernel/script.bin...

I'm going to ask for a refund and return it.

Esteban.

It's a bad sign if ITEAD couldn't get such a standard component correct!

I'll email them about this to see what they have to say.

just received a reply:

The issue is caused by the consistency of capacitor C8. Real value of the capacitor is far below the nominal value, and this problem only exists in a small amount of the capaciters in this batch.

If you are a hardware engineer, you can fix this issue by yourself by following the steps below. IF NOT, please return it to us and we will send a new one to you.

Issue:
Ethernet does not work inIBOX, and green and yellow LED indicators at RJ45 interface flickers once only when powering up, then there is no flicker any more.

Solution:
Replace C8 capacitor with 2.2uF.

Steps:
1 Remove the 4 screws on the back of IBOX, open the back metal cover.
2 Take out the Ibox PCB.
3 Separate the Core board and Ibox PCB with a small tool
4 Remove the capacitor C8 with solder iron as shown in Figure 1, replace with a 2.2uF/0603 capacitor.
5 Install the Core in accordance with the original direction
6 Put the board into the box, tighten the screw.

Interesting.

However, I may have a workaround.

I copied the script.bin from the A20 ITEADOS image to the /boot directory.
It lets me boot consistently with ethernet.   I'll contnue testing

I wonder just how many people got the bad capacitor?   So few people are posting about the IBOX, either they don't have an issue, or may have just given up trying to get it to work!

It's a pain sending it back - count on a at least 1 month turnaround.  Why can't ITEAD just supply a new PCB board to the small number (their statement) of unlucky owners?

As they have replied to you, perhaps you could ask them if they would do that?

I did the cap mod and nothing, nada... I power on and green led blinks... dmesg shows eth0 link up, link down, link up , link down, and so.

Then I disconnect power and now steady green led ...

Anyway it is turning worse for me... now my sd socked failed, as there is no more 'click' and sd can't stay in ...

Well, a totally waste of my time, so I'm sending it back asap.

I have the a10 iteadduino plus too and worked better than this one...

Esteban.

I think they rushed these out without any quality control.

What a shame.

They are going to send new boards for free! Well done Itead!

I got my Ibox running on stock android with TP link 750 Nano wifi adapter. But, the playstore is not full and also, youtube is not playing when I tried it on  browser. It's saying  buffering and never loading the video. Anyone has idea?
today, i am planning to boot on Debian flashed SD card and start learning.
Overall, the ibox is interesting device, but if iTead can  have strong user forum like Cubie, then it would be big success. Hope, itead guys listens to us.

The lack of support of any kind will probably kill this box.

Pity because it works well.
