I'm new here, and I am trying to do a project, but I'm not sure what the best route is. I'm hoping someone will be willing to help guide me here.

I'd like to setup a small, portable, wireless system that I can take in my car with me that will run an Ampache server, accessible via wi-fi on my iPhone with the iAmpache application. I'm not sure which Cubieboard model would be the best fit for this application, or what I would need to do to get something like this setup. Any advice on this?

Thanks for the reply. To give you a little more info on what I am trying to do:

Ampache is a music streaming server that runs on a LAMP server (Linux/Apache/MySql/Php). The HDD would contain a lot of MP3 files, which could be streamed to my iPhone running iAmpache. So, the wireless hardware on the Cubieboard would need to act as a router, allowing me to connect to the device from my iPhone, just like any wireless hotspot. After logging into the wireless hotspot, I should then be able to either access the Apache server with the IOS Safari browser, or the iAmpache app on my iPhone.

Since I have not yet purchased my device, I am looking for guidance on what hardware to buy in order to accomplish this. I am hoping I might actually get to hear from someone who is successfully running Ampache on Cubieboard1, 2, or 3 as a wireless device. I know that Cubieboard1 and Cubieboard2 do not have built-in wi-fi, so, I'd need to make sure that I could find the right hardware to support that, and still work to run Ampache.

If I try to install one of the image files in this link, would it work? I'm confused on which Cubieboard (1, 2, or 3) to buy, and which image I would use. Would one or more of these images work? Do these images inclue everything to actually make ths system work? After installing an appropriate image on an SD card, what else would need to be done?

Debian, Cubian, Cubian Desktop, Linaro? What are all of these?

CB 1 & 2 don't have Wifi, CB 3 & 4 do.
This section is for support on the different distros, could work as a guide:

Cool... Thanks for the link... So, if I understand correctly, I could install the image posted in the following link, and do an "apt-get install Ampache" after installing the image with Apache/MySQL/PHP?

It should be, but also Ampache must be able to run on ARM platform as well, otherwise won't work.
You should check first if Ampache is capable to run on ARM processors.

And you want 'hostap' for your server to be a WiFi Access Point.

There are other tools to add to the 'experience', but it starts with hostap.

Oh, add to that dhcp and probably dns.  Both of which can be provided by dnsmasq (easier for most than dhcpd and bind).

Thanks for all of the info! That's definitely going to be helpful and will save me some research time. I've ordered a Cubieboard3/Cubietruck, and it should be here in a few days. I'll post back with some updates as I progress.
