Cubiboard and 3.5 sata hardrive

Hi All,

I am looking for a very little server to do some backup, running debian with a samba server, and accepting sata disk (I will put a 3TB 3.5 inch 5400RPM)

As this server will not run often (just one time per week to do backup), I can (if I don't have choice) put the hard drive just on the default plastic case, but I would like to know if there is another clean way to do this.

1 - I saw on the official website of cubie board the differents case, but is there any configuration that allow to put a 3.5inch hard drive into a case?

2 - Will the usb power supply of cubieboard be "strong" enough to supply a 3.5 hard drive?

3 - Is that good if I plug the usb power cable into another workstation (a dell poweredge T3400)?

This is my understanding: The SATA port is intended to be used with a 2.5" SSD or HDD. There will not be enough power for a 3.5" drive from the on-board power connector. Even with a 2.5" drive, using USB power may not be enough. A 2A power supply is recommended.

the sataport has no limitation about 2,5 or 3,5" drives. It is just the power connector which has not enough for 2,5 or 3,5" drives. You can use extern PSUs for those setups.

ok so I just need to find a 2A power supply which will replace the USB power cable?
Any clue regarding a case that allow a 3.5 drive?

SATA 2.5" require a single +5V power. Usually 500-700mA capable.
So, more or less, it's required a total 1.0 - 1.5 A (0.5A CubieBoad + 0.5A HDD 2.5" + other devices). 2.0A is better to have no problem.

SATA 3.5" require DUAL POWER: +5V and +12V. It's not possible power 3.5" HDD directly with CubieBoard (it can supply only +5V). You need an external power supply (PSU).
A 3.5" HDD external case with eSata connector can be a solution.
I've a similar case (made by Cooler Master): I've put into it a 3.5" 2TB WD Caviar Green and the case has it's power supply. And has USB 2.0 and eSata connector.
So I'm free to connect my external HDD using USB2.0 or eSata to any devices :-)
