Hi.

Hardware: ARM Cubietruck (Allwinner A20 CPU).
Kernel: suxi-fork of Linux 3.4
OS: Ubuntu 13.04 armhf (Cubietruck v1.00 stock VGA image) with KDE. (provided by Cubietruck team)

1. VLC media player refuses to play music at all (complaining about audio device). No amount of configuration helped me.
2. Other media players sometimes work and sometimes break (KDE Dragon Player and GNOME MPlayer).
They seem to break especially often after trying VLC.
...
Where is the problem ? in ALSA drivers ?

I tried:
# alsa force-reload (didn't help)
# alsamixer (returns me error):
root@cubietruck:~# alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory
root@cubietruck:~# which alsamixer
/usr/bin/alsamixer
...

By no means I'm a sound expert, but it seems like an ALSA driver problem for Allwinner chips. When running GNOME mplayer with default device (ALSA), sound breaks, but if I choose "sunxi-CODEC (alsa)", the sound works. Go figure.
I need help understanding this issue.

Hi there, its only a hunch, but this might work:-

$ sudo su
# apt-get install gstreamer0.10-alsa

(note:- not gstreamer1.0)
That got my music player (decibel) going.  Good luck.

What's in your /etc/asound.conf or .asoundrc file?

braithwa

pcm.!default {
  type hw
  card 1
  device 0
}
ctl.!default {
  type hw
  card 1
}

I found out the problem on my cubietruk was the device names. After doing
# cat /proc/asound/cards
I found out that my card was named as card0 instead of card1. I modified the asound.conf file to look like this:

pcm.!default {
  type hw
  card 0
  device 0
}
ctl.!default {
  type hw
  card 0
}

and now my sound is working just fine. Maybe thats worth a try.

I had no sound with smplayer playing movies. Doing the above then selecting the alsa (0.0 - sunxi -Codec) from options -preferences - audio got it working.
