Cubie truck SD card boot login problem
« on: December 01, 2013, 12:52:38 am »
Hello ,

I am trying the micro sd card boot of lubuntu desktop on my cubietruck.

I followed the steps as in http://docs.cubieboard.org/zh/tutorials/ct1/installation/install_lubuntu_desktop_server_to_sd_card
and using the uboot, kernel, root file system, script.bin and uEnv.txt as given in above link .i.e I am using the default bootable pre-built images from the above link.

My output is to a HDMI TV.

Below is the problem I am facing.

1. I am able to see the boot messages on the TV and after boot up before I can enter the login ID and password the screen goes blank within 2-3 seconds. Hence I am not able to login and see the default login screen.

2. I tried changing the uEnv.txt with various HDMI options such as

disp.screen0_output_mode=EDID:1280x1024p60,

disp.screen0_output_mode=EDID:1024*768 p50,
disp.screen0_output_mode=EDID:800x600p50.

But all these options are behaving the same way and I am able to see the login screen only
for 2-3 secs before screen going blank.

Could anybody help me here as I am using the pre built images , so that i can login and see the desktop screen.
After this works I plan to boot using my own kernel, u-boot.

Thanks,
yk

EDID:<some-fixed-hdmi-setting> works like this: if the monitor is attached and replies with a setting that the kernel supports, use that setting; otherwise, use <some-fixed-hdmi-setting>.

If you want to force a fixed setting, get rid of the "EDID:" part.

thanks patwood for the response.

yes i have already tried removing EDID as you suggested with a fixed setting  <some-fixed-hdmi-setting>, but my problem was that I was not able to see the lubuntu desktop after boot up (i.e no GUI seen).

I think with this root file system we can login only through ssh and cannot use GUI.

Hi,
I'm now writing this reply from cubietruck. I cannot remember all details but I will write down the way briefly.

0. <current situation> blank screen, a prompt is blinking. SSH login works normally.
1. Press "Ctrl-Alt-F1", it will change your screen to a terminal screen.
2. Install LXDE package. I'm not good at linux. I don't know if it was installed from the beginning.
3. Login as 'linaro'. With root authority you cannot run web browser
4. $startx
5. You can see Lubuntu desktop GUI

I hope this process solve your problem.
